Music Marketing Project #1

Music Marketing Project

My group and I worked together to develop our music marketing project.

The project consisted of being assigned a genre and choosing a song to use as our metaphorical band’s first release. To promote our “band,” a compilation of research had to be done first to understand music marketing. Then a music video would be produced. Lastly, a presentation is made to put our work together and promote it. The goal is to be able to sell this band and grasp the public’s attention. The process involved the analysis of different artists’ discography, position in the public eye, and online presence. Furthered by asking why they do what they do, and how. Basically finding the purpose for their actions and of their companies, which we can use to involve in our own band and marketing. The first steps were taken once given the genre ‘Pop.’ A couple of songs were available to us to choose from the genre. As a group, we agreed upon the song “We Are Young” by fun, featuring Janelle Monáe. From this moment, things could take charge. Each task was scheduled to be done by our own due dates. This avoided having to work last minute, and getting the assignment finished carelessly.

Research & Presentation

Before dividing the work between each of the 4 members, we took our time studying the basics of marketing. It was a necessity. We were able to understand the different types of music videos and their purpose. For example, there are promotional, storytelling, artistic, and a combination of music video productions. After, the division, two focused on research, and the others on the music video. A word document was created to add what we knew and what needed to be done. As seen in the image below, there are sections filled and needed to be filled. As progress went on, more data was covered. The same carried on for the case study. Two successful music companies, Big Hit Music and Republic Records, were the focus of interest. Intensive research was done on the companies to study their ways of promoting and attaining exposure for their artists. It shows the importance that to successfully market a band to investors, information must not only be accurate but also represent that we understand how to manipulate the information in order to succeed in our own band promotion.

Case Studies

Storyboard & Video

Each of us took our time to listen to the song multiple times and dissect its lyrics to acquire our interpretation of them. We spoke among ourselves sharing our thoughts. Brainstorming, and differentiating views and ideas expanded the creative aspect of the development of our video. At first, we wrote down how we perceived the song and wanted to interpret it in a visual aspect. Thus, we wrote down the key phrases, "Reminisce" and "Forget each other," as the main idea of our vision. From there, I began writing the descriptions of what our goal was and then designed the storyboard. After, we scheduled the date and time for production. We shot scenes multiple times for reassurance, and in different ways just in case. Sometimes we did not go by our storyboard, which worried us, thinking we were making a mistake, In the end, it allowed to be more open in our shots and not felt restricted in what we did.

Presentation

The presentation is the cornerstone of the marketing project. It gathers all the work we had collected and makes it digestible for the theoretical “investors”. The presentation would include aspects from marketing techniques to be used in order to gain a larger reach as well as the business aspects used in current groups that allow them to be profitable. It then displays the music video, which displays these same techniques in order to show that they were reciprocated.
